Gateway Ratings Summary
ELA 6th to 8th Grade Overview
Connections Literature partially meets expectations for Gateway 2: Comprehension Through Texts, Questions, and Tasks. The program features a coherent instructional design that integrates multiple literacy strands and engages students in meaningful, text-based questions, discussions, and writing tasks that support comprehension and evidence-based thinking. It also includes a range of assessments and writing opportunities that build and integrate literacy skills. However, the program does not consistently meet expectations for text complexity or balance, relying heavily on literary, short-form texts and limiting opportunities for sustained knowledge-building. Instructional supports—such as scaffolding, vocabulary, sentence-level work, and writing processes—are present but uneven in clarity and alignment to student needs. Opportunities for cross-text analysis, extended research, and sustained academic discourse are also inconsistent, and guidance for using assessment data to inform instruction is limited. Overall, the program provides a strong foundation with engaging content and a coherent structure, while also presenting opportunities to strengthen text complexity and balance, improve the consistency of instructional supports, and enhance systems for knowledge-building and data-informed teaching to fully meet expectations. The program does not qualify for a Gateway 3 review at this time.
